Bella’s Bartok

‘Into the Woods’ is song written with a journey into the unknown, of facing both inward and outward fears in order to better overcome them both. Directly inspired by the old Russian tale of Vasilisa the Beautiful and the Baba Yaga, the lyrics tell of a growing darkness starting to penetrate the waking world. The old gods of the east are stirring — will the narrator face her fears and embrace the mysteries of the forest? Or will she fall victim to the Baba Yaga’s ethereal machinations?

Once again Bella’s Bartok is waving their freak flag fly high, fiercely and free. They hauntingly invite us to question why we aren’t dancing more and to throw inhibitions to the wayside. There is comfort in their warm sonic embrace. They are at the edge of dreams that come between the dawn at the end of the night.

The Floors may be broken but our hearts are full.

Liz Bills

“He’s a wildfire and I tried to put him out… I’m a hurricane and I just feed the flames.” This is the raw, vulnerable side of Liz: just her voice,  guitar, and a story about heartbreak that speaks to all of who have loved. Liz is brave to be so vulnerable and real in this recent release. The drive here to connect and share is both sweet and ferocious. Liz is hosting a secret 🤫 listening party for her debut solo album “Change” on Friday, November 21 at The Burren in Somerville!

This is not a public release. The songs will only be shared with those in the room that night — you’ll be among the very first to hear the entire album, long before it’s released to the world. Liz won’t be releasing Change publicly for a while, making this an exclusive opportunity to experience her most vulnerable and transformative work in its raw, unfiltered form.

Liz will perform the album live from start to finish, true to how it’s recorded — creating a powerful, emotional journey through every song in order, just as it was meant to be heard.

The evening will also celebrate Liz’s birthday, so expect laughter, connection, and a few joyful surprises.

Opening the night is the soulful and radiant Jessica Songbird, whose voice will set the tone for an unforgettable evening of heart, healing, and music.

Setlist

  • Big Chungus
  • Wizard of Mops / Control
  • Hungry Like the Wolf * / Believe ^ / Hungry Like the Wolf *
  • Fading Lights
  • Paradigm

Leon Trout was clearly having fun with playing releases from their sophmore album ‘Paradigm’, with aggressive guitar and bass and drums  intent to smash through with pure adrenaline. The track “Big Chungus” pays tribute to the story of Eduardo Garcia, a chef who lost one hand in a freak accident after touching a dead bear that lay on top of a power line. Wizard of Mops continues to homage inside jokes among frieneds about a friend who would bring mops to our shows, which became totems at music festivals where people would just dance around with these mops. Who doesnt like a good mashup with Leon Trout? Here they devour Believe like the wolf of myth, with more than enough in the tank to deliver performances of new tracks Fading Lights and Paradigm.

HannaH’s Field

Fully Let Go features HannaH’s Field with Michael Walker of Goodbye Ego along with Michael Bafundo & John Mundy of West End Blend. Their magical mix of jam-band, drum-circle, healing-chant, beach reggae delivers healing sound waves and music as a form of sonic medicine.

Lyrics

Take a moment to breathe.

Fresh Air heals my lungs Open up to see what you shall become When we return to the sea.

Our bodies burn to dust

Teach me how to fly, to flow, fully Let Go.

Fully Let Go.

Always end each day with a positive thought and a grateful heart.

I grieve for the trees.

Will you believe in me?

I’ll dance inside your dreams.

Wake up an remember me.

Feathers fall so far but never disappear I’ll live inside your heart.

Your presence is so clear.

Teach me how to fly, to flow, fully Let Go. Fully Let Go.

Always end each day with a positive thought and a grateful heart.

When you weep for me inside your garden bed Look up to the sky.

I’ll Lift up my head And then when you look down.

A purple flower grows

Teach me how to fly, to flow, fully let go.

Always end each day with a positive thought and a grateful heart.

Harry Brown carrying a basket of freshly harvested cannabis at Harry Brown’s Farm, Starks Maine, during The Happening 2025

Harvest season has come home to The Hill in 2025, and the fields are alive with autumn energy. The crisp mornings carry the scent of ripening cannabis and freshly turned soil, while the warm afternoons remind us of the long days of work and play that made this season possible. With the chill in the air comes hearty harvests—pumpkins, apples, and the special deep green flowers that have defined our culture for decades.

The spark of new dreams for the next season is already here; ideas are being shared around campfires, whispered backstage at shows throughout New England, and talked through over meals at the farmhouse kitchen table. As the year winds down, we’re already buzzing with excitement for what’s ahead.

Before we look forward to the Black Friday launch of tickets for The Happening 2026, it feels like the perfect moment to pause and celebrate where we’ve been. This past summer was nothing short of magical, as our community of Hillcats came together to dance, create, and share the start of summer in the place where it all started.

Here are just a few of our favorite moments from The Happening that continue to inspire us as we head into a new year.

New road sign for Harry Brown’s Farm on Route 43 in Starks, Maine, home of The Happening music and cannabis culture festival

We were so excited to share our brand-new sign for Harry Brown’s Farm, now proudly standing out on Route 43! The bold colors and handcrafted details catch the eye of every traveler heading through Starks, serving as both a landmark and a welcome home. A project like this reminds us that so much happens behind the scenes before a festival ever begins—the quiet work of planning, building, painting, and fixing that lays the foundation for everything else. It truly took a community effort to dig, lift, paint, and position everything just right.

A huge thank you goes to “Uncle Chris” for his creative design and painting, as well as to the tractor operators, shovelers, pick-axers, and fine-tuners who brought it all together. The new sign not only points the way to the farm but also celebrates the spirit of teamwork and love that makes the vibe on The Hill. Every nail hammered, every shovel lifted, every brush stroke applied was a reminder that the magic of The Happening begins long before the first band takes the stage.

Ganja Grail 2025 winners board with cannabis competition vote tallies at Harry Brown’s Farm, The Happening music and cannabis culture festival in Maine

The Ganja Grail VIII showcased 16 amazingflower entries, each one representing months of dedication, cultivation, and love from some of the best growers in Maine and beyond. After five hours of head-to-head matchups, only one strain could claim the reign of Champion. The final round came down to SubZero by Vargas Farms versus Apples & Bananas from Maine Street Cannabis Company, two strains that had already won over the crowd with their unique aromas and beautiful flowers.

When the crystals were tallied, Vargas Farms pulled ahead with a 56–40 victory, as judged by the most important critics of all—anyone at the festival who wanted to vote. The Grail tent was buzzing all afternoon, with Hillcats sharing notes, trading favorites, and celebrating the artistry of cannabis cultivation.

More than just a competition, the Ganja Grail is a celebration of cannabis, community, and the farmers who pour their passion into every flower.

Festival-goers swimming at the Lilypad Stage during The Happening 2025 in Starks, Maine

What a weekend down at the Lilypad—solstice summer magic from start to finish! Saturday was hot and beautiful, with sunshine that begged everyone to dive in and cool off. The water glittered in the afternoon light, alive with floaties, noodles, and the sounds of Hillcats splashing, laughing, and drifting together. Pool noodles, floaties, and nonstop laughter turned the water into a splash-filled dance floor of its own.

As the sun dipped behind the trees, 207Sounds and TheHive lit up the night, delivering the immaculate rave-ready vibes that fueled the crowd through the night. From daytime dips to late-night beats, the Lilypad was the place where summer fun and festival energy came together in the best way possible. It was one of those rare spaces where the carefree joy of childhood and the high-energy release of festival nights existed side by side.

Laser light show at The Happening 2025 by Cam Derr and Nocturnal Productions at Harry Brown’s Farm, Maine

Thursday night kicked off with a bang as Cam Derr and Nocturnal Purple Productions lit up the hill with a laser light show for the fam. Bursts of light shot across the sky, carving neon pathways through the darkness, and when the fog rolled in, it became the perfect canvas for beams of vivid color. The hillside glowed like a living painting, with shifting patterns that danced as far as the eye could see. Leon Trout soared onto the stage and dropped into a set that synced effortlessly with the swirling lights.

The energy was electric, and the crowd of Hillcats was swept up in a wave of sound, color, and pure festival magic. It was the kind of synchronicity that could only happen at Harry’s—a perfect alignment.

Families enjoying camping and crafts at The Happening 2025, a family-friendly music festival in Starks, Maine

Families were out in full force for The Happening 2025, filling the hillside with laughter and energy. Kids formed their own little tribes, running between campsites and inventing games that carried from dawn to dusk. The Family Camping area buzzed with activity, offering a safe and welcoming space for parents to relax while their little ones explored. Over at the Kid’s Zone, hosted by the ever-creative Athena, the craft table became a hub of imagination, with tiny hands busy painting, gluing, and creating treasures to bring home. Parents joined in the fun too, making it as much a gathering place for community connection as it was for play.

Watching the next generation of Hillcats scamp around the festival grounds was a reminder that The Happening 2025 was more than music—it’s a celebration of family, creativity, and belonging. And when kids returned home proudly carrying crafts and stories, they carried a piece of the Hill with them.

Liz Bills performing with Dog8Dog at The Happening 2025, Maine live music festival

Collaborations were the heartbeat of The Happening 2025, spilling across all three stages throughout the weekend. From surprise guest spots to unplanned jam sessions, the energy of musicians lifting each other up was everywhere you turned. Liz Bills stepped in with her powerhouse vocals to support her sisters in Dog8Dog, adding a soaring layer to their already electric set before Bella’s Bartok took the stage.

Later, the decks lit up for legendary Back2Back Deck2Deck rave activities, where the community danced as hard as they could to celebrate Teddy and honor the lasting influence of DJ No Mercy on the Maine EDM scene and beyond. Each collaboration was a love letter to the enduring spirit of unity and creativity. Magic happens when artists and community come together—and The Happening 2025 proved it again and again, from the smallest campfire jam to the biggest stage moments.

Sunrise over Lemon Stream Valley at Harry Brown’s Farm during The Happening 2025 in Starks, Maine

There are always a lot of feelings that come with the sunrise, and they depend entirely on how the night before unfolded. Some Hillcats stumbled up the path still buzzing from the rave, while others came quietly, wrapped in blankets and smiles, ready to welcome the day. Pockets of tired but happy friends made the trek to the top, finding a favorite spot to settle in for a natural light show.

They were not disappointed.

As the first light broke, streaks of orange and red burst over the Maine hills, setting the sky ablaze. Below, the fog drifted lazily along the Lemon Stream valley, curling and winding like a dragon from a dream, carrying the magic of the night into a brand-new day. These sunrise moments remind us why we gather here: to witness beauty, to share it together, and to leave a little more whole than when we arrived.

Bella’s Bartok live at The Happening 2025 with lasers and firepit at Harry Brown’s Farm in Starks, Maine

There is nothing like a Bella’s Bartok show, and there is no place like Harry Brown’s Farm. With their powers combined, Saturday night erupted into an explosion of sound, color, and unstoppable energy. Known for their wild blend of folk, punk and glam, the band turned the stage into a carnival of soaring vocals and dance-driving rhythms. Hillcats could be seen swept up in the theatrical spectacle that is Bella’s Bartok, moving together as if the music itself was pulling the strings. Every chorus felt like a rallying cry, every stomp and note like a spark fanning the fire of the community. In the end, the love was everywhere, proving once again that when Bella’s Bartok come to The Hill, it’s more than a concert—it’s a celebration to the light, a ritual of joy, and a memory stamped on the soul.

As we reflect on The Happening 2025, it’s impossible not to feel gratitude for the community that makes it all possible. From the farmers tending their plants to the artists bringing their vision to the stage, from the parents guiding little ones through the Kid’s Zone to the dancers who never leave the floor, every single Hillcat contributes to the magic of this place.

The festival is more than an event—it’s a living tradition that grows with each passing year.

Looking ahead, we’re already dreaming about The Happening 2026. Tickets will launch this Black Friday, and we know the anticipation is already building. Next summer promises even more music, more art, more collaboration, and more of the unforgettable moments that define life on The Hill.

Until then, we carry the spirit of The Happening with us—into the harvest, into the winter, and into every community we touch.

Because in the end, The Hill is not just a location—it’s a way of life, and every Hillcat carries a piece of it in their heart.

Let it come, let it go <3

Fall at Harry Brown’s Farm – Colors, Clover & Community

Colors are showing in the valley below The Hill like brushstrokes. Each community of trees has its own personality, but they seem to get along just fine. It feels like every weekend has been sunny and the rain has held off all summer. Maybe we’ll make up for it with a lot of snow this winter!

Harry has been watering every day, cultivating all summer, and has even found a few patches of 4-leaf clovers. The garden is ripe, full of delicious raspberries, kale, carrots — and of course, monster cannabis plants.

Support your local community of artists! Head out to the fair or farmer’s market and find something that makes you happy to bring home.

🍂 Fall in New England is a beautiful time of the year.

In the Kitchen with Harry

One of the Hilltop favorites over the summer has been tomatoes and toast.

You start with homemade bread made with whole grains. First, slice some bread for toasting. Grab a fresh and ripe tomato from the garden. The Cherokee Purple tomato is a favorite. Wash the tomato for 30 seconds under running water and slice into at least five slices. The middle slices are the best for toast.

After the bread has become lightly toasted, eject and spread room temperature butter onto the toast. With refrigerated mayo, add a light spread and place your juicy slices of tomato onto the toasted bread.

Best enjoyed with water, apple cider, or iced tea.

Looking Ahead

🎟️ Tickets to The Happening 2026 will be available starting on Black Friday, November 28 — the only public event at Harry Brown’s Farm next year.

What Makes The Happening Different? It’s the People, the Vibe, The Hill

What Makes The Happening Different? It’s the People, the Vibe, The Hill

The Happening is more than just a weekend party—it’s a community music festival in Maine unlike any other. Held every June at Harry Brown’s Farm in Starks, it brings together artists, activists, and music lovers for a grassroots celebration of connection, cannabis culture, and creativity.

1. A Community, Not a Crowd

At The Happening, you’re not just attending a festival—you’re part of it. From first-time guests to longtime family, everyone contributes to the magic. Whether you’re sharing a meal, joining a jam session, or helping someone find their tent, it’s all built on trust and kindness. If you’re looking for a community music festival in Maine that’s built on real connection and heart, this is it.

2. A Cannabis-Friendly Culture That Respects the Land

The vibe is elevated—literally. Cannabis has always been a part of the culture at The Hill, but this isn’t about excess. It’s about intention, celebration, and shared respect. We say it often: No powders, no pills, no pressurized gasses. Just flower, friends, and flow. Stay green. Stay chill. Keep the scene clean.

Want to learn more about Maine cannabis laws? Check out this article and get the deets.

3. Music That Moves You, Not Marketing

Our lineup is powered by passion, not algorithms. You’ll find fire-spinners, psychedelic jam bands, beatmakers, acoustic troubadours, and wild experimental sets—often on the same stage. It’s discovery, not a greatest-hits reel.

Explore the Festival Hub.

4. The Hill Is Sacred

For nearly 30 years, Harry Brown’s Farm has hosted gatherings that celebrate freedom, community, and creative expression. The land holds stories. You can feel it in the drum circles, the sunrise sets, and the quiet morning walks through the dew. What makes The Happening stand out from every other community music festival in Maine is the people, the land, and the love.

🎟️ Ready to Feel the Difference?

You can’t fake this kind of magic. It’s real because we build it together. Come be part of the energy, the love, the music—and the moment.
